"No," Laurnen replied stubbornly, folding her arms over her chest as she glared at Stey.
"Your Highness, I insist that you bring your escort on your outing," he persisted, keeping his gaze even, but Laurnen could tell her was upset by the way he gripped the table in front of him. Only Stey, her bodyguard since forever, would dare to talk to the Queen that way, even though Laurnen wouldn't hurt anyone who did, unlike popular suspicion.
She shook her head. "I've said it enough already, Stey! I don't need a bodyguard - or escort - wherever I go! I can protect myself, which you know. Besides, I don't want people staring and bowing at me today - I just want to go to the market and around the city. I don't need them to know I'm Queen immediately."
Stey ground his teeth, now visibly frustrated. "But, Your Highness--"
"No 'buts', Stey. I'm going out, and I'm going out without an escort. I'm not going to change my mind," she said irritatedly, finally having enough with this discussion. It happened every time - it wasn't like she always needed a guard to bring her everywhere like a child.
Grabbing a plain, worn brown cloak, she buttoned it over her brown skirt and white top. She wore no jewelry or make-up today, just something any commoner would wear. Shooting Stey a look, she opened the door and let it fall closed behind her as she walked down the hall, her shoes making a soft shuffling noise every time they hit the stone floor.
When she reached sight of the guards holding open the huge, main door that led into her castle, she nodded slightly to them as they bowed low to their Queen. Even though she wasn't dressed in any finery, they recognized her because of her remarkable pale pink hair. As soon as she walked past the guards and the door, she deftly twisted it into a bun with the help of a few pins, and threw the cloak's hood over it, so her hair wouldn't show. She just wanted to be any other commoner today, not royalty. Sometimes, the pressure got to be too much, and she wanted to slouch and walk around causally like any other normal person. But, of course, she couldn't, because she was Queen, and would act like it. And she did - but then she did have the occasional outing like today.
Crossing over the wooden drawbridge, Laurnen left castle grounds and entered Indopion. People crowded around her, not afraid to bump, push, or jostle her, and she had to should her way through the crowds. Indopion was always this busy - actually, it was less busy than normal, since it was Winter and not many merchants came in the cold and snow - since it was a trade center, and prospered because of it.
Finally, Laurnen reached her destination - the marketplace. It was the size of the residential district - very large. Traders yelled and waved at passerby to come and buy their cheap, rare items, and smells of foods wafted across the air. Beggars and thieves mixed in with the crowd, and every so often Laurnen would hear a shout as - she assumed - someone found their moneybag missing. Ah, she would always love the gorgeous marketplace, a place where every species would easily be found and fates could change.
